You've heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard of GivingTuesday? Held annually the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this generosity campaign was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
Women In Bio is officially participating in GivingTuesday this year and is asking for donations in support of our Young Women In Bio (YWIB) initiative. YWIB empowers today’s girls to become tomorrow’s leaders, helping them effect positive change through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Your donation will enable YWIB to continue to partner with leading companies, universities, hospitals, and organizations to develop engaging, educational, and motivational programs.
A survey commissioned by Microsoft found that young girls become interested in STEM subjects around the age of 11 and then quickly lose interest when they're 15. "This means that governments, teachers and parents only have four or five years to nurture girls' passion before they turn their backs on these areas, potentially for good," Microsoft said. This is why one of YWIB's goals is to create a community for girls, getting them interested in STEM at an even younger age. YWIB is also working towards providing transportation to its events for girls in underserved areas.
