Being African American women some of these challenges are related to the color of their skin while some related to them being women. Here we will learn about their story of overcoming and their advice on the importance of addressing diversity.

Angela James, Ph.D.
Dr. James (Director, Global Development Project Leader, Astellas Pharma) is a highly accomplished executive professional, leading global cross-functional project teams to enhance and accelerate development of novel immuno-oncology therapeutics using innovative, competitive drug development strategies. Having graduated with a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, she rose up the career ladder swiftly demonstrating her passion, leadership abilities, and scientific expertise. She has extensive regulatory experience and drives the alignment, refinement, and execution of an integrated global strategy and development plans for immuno-oncology programs.
Tammy Smithers, Ed.D.
Dr. Smithers (Visiting Scholar, Rutgers University, Samuel Dewitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity & Justice) has more than 15 years of experience working in the private and public sectors. She holds an MBA from Rice University and was formerly a financial advisor for three Fortune 100 companies, including a Wall Street firm. Dr. Smithers earned an Ed.D. in Ethical Leadership from the University of St. Thomas-Houston. She will teach a graduate course on diversity, equity, and leadership this fall. During the current racial climate, she developed and moderated a two-part series of panel discussions entitled, “Racism, Whiteness, and Privilege.” Dr. Smithers’ commitment to social justice, gender equality, diversity, equity and inclusion work is evident in her devotion to academic research, published articles, and community involvement.
