HERstory: Honoring Outstanding Women in Biotech. The HERstory Gala is the premier event for our chapter and it’s supporters. This elegant event attracts men and women from industry, government, non-profits organizations, and academia from across the Capital Region Metro Area and provides unique opportunities to meet with some of the region’s most successful women. This event is focused on highlighting women trailblazers in the life sciences who have made significant impact in the region. Click here to see coverage of last year’s inaugural event. Ticket price includes a cocktail reception with open bar, a seated dinner, and networking with biotech industry leaders in the Capital Region. Organizations purchasing tables will be acknowledged in the program and during the opening remarks.

 

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Carol A. Nacy is a founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Sequella, Inc., a privately-held pharmaceutical company that discovers and develops new and more effective treatments for life-threatening infectious diseases. Sequella raised $99M to date from institutional and individual investors and peer-reviewed grants. Prior to Sequella, Dr. Nacy was Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at EntreMed, Inc., from 1993 through its successful public offering in June 1996. She left EntreMed in November 1996 to establish Sequella, Inc. and was part-time Chief Scientific Officer (1997-1998) for Anergen, Inc., a California company focused on autoimmune diseases.
 
Dr. Nacy became full time CEO and Chair of the Board of Sequella in January 1999. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of for-profit companies (Tolergen, Inc., Social and Scientific Systems) and non-profit agencies (Sequella Foundation, Tech Council of Maryland, Foundation for Soldier and World Health, Keck Graduate Institute) and on a number of committees in global health organizations.
 
Prior to her business experience, Dr. Nacy was career scientist and science manager for 17 years at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, DC, where she studied tropical infectious diseases. She has published over 165 scientific papers to date. She earned her A.B., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC: in 2002 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Science from this institution.

 
Amy Millman is a passionate advocate for women entrepreneurs building Big Businesses Starting Small. In 2000, Amy co-founded Springboard Enterprises, to accelerate the growth of entrepreneurial companies led by women through access to essential resources and a global community of experts. It is now the leading network of influencers, investors and innovators dedicated to building high-growth companies led by women who are transforming industries in technology and life science.
 
The Springboard portfolio numbers over 750 companies securing investment of financial and human capital for product development and expansion, having raised over $10 Billion, created tens of thousands new jobs and generated billions in annual revenues. With 190 exits to strategic acquirers and 20 IPOs, Springboard entrepreneurs are transforming industries.
 
During her career in Washington, DC, she served as a lobbyist for several industry groups and was appointed as Executive Director of the National Women's Business Council, a US federal commission, from 1993-2000. She's a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and holds a Masters degree in Public Administration from The George Washington University.
