WIB-Atlanta presents MAPS University's March event at Georgia State University with guest speaker Marylen Rimando, Health Scientist of IHRC, Inc. Marylen is a project manager, scientist, and mentor interested in health informatics, health outcomes, healthcare innovation, quality improvement, and women's and minority health. This event is an excellent opportunity for students and postdocs to learn about alternative career paths outside academia, and to connect with leading Atlanta professionals.

 
 
 
Speaker Bio

 

Marylen Rimando earned her bachelor’s in psychology and master’s in public health from Mercer University, and PhD in Health Promotion and Behavior, focus in Health Communication, from the University of Georgia. She has five years of college teaching experience. At UGA, she earned an outstanding teaching award in 2009, Ramsey Dissertation Award in 2010, and was one of 15 doctoral students selected for the 2009-2010 Teaching Mentor program. In 2014, she earned a $1,200 travel award to attend an NIH Postdoctoral Preparation Institute in Bethesda, Maryland on career transitions. After a three-year postdoc in the Rural Health Institute at Georgia Southern University, she transitioned into a Health Scientist III role at IHRC, Inc. in Atlanta. Her interests include healthcare innovations, health policy, scientific translation to lay audiences, women’s health, and minority health. 

Maylen is actively involved in serving the local community. She has volunteered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Open Hand Atlanta, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. She is a volunteer driver for Second Helping Atlanta and a food pantry volunteer for Community Assistance Center, serving residents of Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. She is also a member of the Women In Bio Atlanta chapter and the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP). She enjoys meditation, painting, and making arts and crafts.
