Speaker Biographies

Tina Liedtky, VP US Commercial Operations, Abbott - Tina is a highly accomplished, strategic leader with a breadth of experience across the medical device and diagnostics industry. She has a record of success in building, growing and managing multimillion-dollar businesses across a variety of therapies and technologies for both start-ups and large companies. Ms. Liedtky is currently Vice President, US Commercial Operations for Abbott Rapid Diagnostics. Prior to Abbott, she held leadership positions at Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and Covidien. Ms. Liedtky graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University, and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

 

Ciara Kennedy Ph.D. president and CEO of Amplyx Pharmaceuticals - Amplyx has successfully raised over $110M to develop novel treatments for life-threatening invasive fungal infections. Prior to joining Amplyx, Dr. Kennedy served as COO at Lumena Pharmaceuticals until the company was acquired by Shire Pharmaceuticals in June 2014. She played a critical role in the development of assets licensed from Pfizer and Sanofi, raising $78M from venture capital to fund operations and preparing to take the company public. Prior to Lumena and Shire, she was vice president of operations and senior director of strategy and corporate development at Cypress Bioscience Inc., before that she held several positions in the program and alliance department of Biogen Idec. She received her doctorate at the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and continued her research at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla, California. She obtained a MBA as member of the inaugural class of the Rady School of Management at UCSD.

 

Ragen Lester, Manager Alliances, Illumina - Ragen is an Alliance Manager within the Corporate and Business Development group at Illumina, Inc. In this role, Ragen supports strategic partnerships within the fast-growing genomics market. With 25 years of experience in the biotech industry, she brings strategic partnering, biomarker research, life science sales, diagnostic marketing and in vitro diagnostic product development experience into her role. Prior to Illumina, Ragen held positions in product marketing at Hologic (formerly Gen-Probe), sales for Qiagen and Promega and research positions at Ixsys, Inc. (acquired by Applied Molecular Evolution) and Tera Biotech. Ragen has a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from UC, San Diego.

 

Melissa Fitzgerald Ph.D., Head Strategic Research Partnerships, Pfizer - Melissa is a Senior Director, Oncology for Pfizer’s External Science & Innovation (ES & I) group. In this role, Melissa leads pre-POC asset scouting efforts for the CSO of Tumor Cell Biology at Pfizer La Jolla and helps expand and manage partnerships with key academic institutes, start-ups and biotech companies in areas of scientific and strategic interest for the CSO. Melissa has held positions at Dura Pharmaceuticals, UCSD Technology Transfer, and Amylin Pharmaceuticals. Melissa obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University and was a post-doc in the Department of Molecular Biology at Scripps Research in La Jolla.

 

Moderator: Lisel Ferguson, Partner, Procopio - Lisel counsels clients on patent, trademark and copyright prosecution worldwide, and intellectual property litigation throughout the United States. Prior to practicing law, she spent over five years managing eco-tourism research projects and marine mammal diving physiology research. Mrs. Ferguson’s law practice focuses on medical devices, life science products, computer hardware and software, sporting goods, apparel, Internet, entertainment, agricultural products and services, and consumer goods. She is admitted to practice before all the Federal and State Courts in many different states. She has a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, San Diego.
