Speaker Biographies

Judit Bartalis, Ph.D.  Dr. Bartalis is currently the Manager of Analytical Department at a local biotech company Tioga Research since 2016 where she supports formulation innovation and skin permeation screening studies for a spectrum of prospective skin-applied product programs for both pharmaceutical and beauty care applications. She earned her Ph.D. in Natural Products Chemistry and Biochemistry on liver-protective and disease-preventive molecules from the Cucurbitaceae plants from SDSU in Brooking SD (2005). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cigarette smoke research by focusing on highly labile organic free radicals at Philip Morris USA in Richmond VA (2007). Following, she moved to San Diego to join Synthetic Genomics where she provided leadership, technical expertise, and hands-on analytical method development in support of algae biofuel research, methane and other volatile organic compounds from coal, microbial communities research for enhanced food and fuel crop productivity, and microalgae-based high value chemicals. She also had the opportunity to consult for academia, industry, and biotech research companies on analytical technology for a range of chemical entities including cannabinoids and terpenoids from medical and adult-use marijuana.

Michelle Sexton, ND  Dr. Sexton is Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of California San Diego. She earned her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle Washington, 2008. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington in the Departments of Pharmacology and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Her NIH-funded pre-doctoral and postdoctoral research on the topic of cannabinoids and their roles in neuro-inflammation and neuro-degeneration, investigated cannabis use and in patients with Multiple Sclerosis and impact on inflammatory markers. She has presented her research internationally and is published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Sexton’s clinical practice, research and teaching focus is on the endocannabinoid system and potential roles for cannabis across a range of conditions and age groups. She is a member of the International Cannabinoid Research Society, the International Association of Cannabinoid Medicine, and the Society of Cannabis Clinicians. She maintains a small medical practice in San Diego, CA.

Julia Pinkhasov, Ph.D.  Dr. Julia Pinkhasov is an outcome-focused scientist with over ten years of research experience and contributed novel insights within multiple research disciplines, including plant biotechnology, immunology, and autoimmune pathology. Here, at IQVIA, Julia develops regulatory strategies by compiling scientific data in support of the orphan drug candidate(s) in order to obtain regulatory approval. Julia authors regulatory documents for the U.S. FDA and E.U. EMA including orphan drug designations, briefing meeting documents, breakthrough therapy designations, pediatric rare disease designations, and strategic reviews. In her previous role as an Assistant Research Professor at UCLA School of Medicine, Julia established an independent research program and conducted pre-clinical and clinical studies to examine novel therapeutic targets on T cells in lupus mouse models and patients. She has a Doctorate in Philosophy from Arizona State University and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
