For the first time in what will hopefully be an annual event, Young Women In Bio Pittsburgh participated as a sponsor in the 76th annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF). PRSEF is an open competition for research projects in science, mathematics and engineering with nearly 1,100 students covering grades 6-12 from 23 counties across Western Pennsylvania as well as parts of West Virginia and Maryland.
On March 27, 2015, YWIB chose 2 outstanding young women from the 7th and 8th grade Intermediate Biology category with $50 sponsor awards. Haley Nichols, a seventh grader at Falk Laboratory School, Pittsburgh, was awarded our first prize YWIB sponsorship award. Ms. Nichols’ project was entitled, “Is Himalayan Sea Salt Best?” She did an outstanding job in troubleshooting, testing and retesting her sea monkey system when the initial experimental setups failed. Her presentation style was also energetic and engaging. Our second sponsorship was awarded to Isabelle Kowenhoven, an eighth grader at St. Thomas More, Pittsburgh. She researched “How much light is too much light?” Before collecting tables and tables of plant growth data, Ms. Kowenhoven first constructed her own refrigerator sized light box.
Both of these young women displayed great resourcefulness and tenacity in completing their project goals. We look forward to next year’s event!
