WIB-Capital Region: YWIB-Capital Region Fall Semester Recap and Looking Ahead

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

With the 2016 year upon us, the YWIB Capital Region chapter wanted to take a moment to reflect on such a successful fall semester. The school year began with a change in chapter leadership, but thanks to our dedicated committee members we didn’t lose any momentum in the transition. This fall we partnered with the University of Maryland and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technologies to host two afternoons of hands-on science, lab tours and STEM career discussions for middle school through college-aged women. Both events received enthusiastic reviews from participants and we hope to collaborate with such great sponsors in the future. In addition, our committee worked to increase YWIB’s reach and reputation within the greater the education community. In November, YWIB volunteers participated in the ATLAS expo for STEM careers and colleges and later, kicked off the new year with a day exhibiting at the Maryland Out of School Time networking conference. We encourage WIB members to check out pictures and more details on these events on our Facebook page and upcoming chapter website. 2016 is already looking fruitful, with new partnerships and activities underway.

Thank you to our wonderful team and to WIB overall for all the support you have provided us this year. Cheers!

WIB-Capital Region: YWIB STEM Event at UMD, November 18, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

The University of Maryland and WIB-Capital Region Young Women In Bio co-hosted a STEM event on November 18, 2015. The afternoon was a huge success, with 14 young women present to learn how to extract DNA from cancer cells. The girls also attended a panel of six women professionals representing various career backgrounds: Genetic Counselor, Medical Writer, Engineer, Speech Pathologist, PharmD, and MD/Oncologist.

Each panelist provided the girls with unique insights on how she pursued her career in science. Each panelist also offered guidance and mentoring for interested young women. Finally, the attendees completed a tour of the Center of Innovative BioMedical Research. The whole event was a major success, as demonstrated by results of the survey given to attendees after the event. We thank all of our members, guests and, sponsors who supported us in this program.

WIB-Capital Region: YWIB Visits IMET, November 12, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

Young Women In Bio partnered with the Institute for Marine and Environmental Technologies (IMET) on November 12, 2015 for an afternoon exploring aquatic treasures. Furthermore, YWIB had the pleasure of registering this event in the first Maryland STEM Festival Week! We thank all our members, non-members, and sponsors who helped us make this a success.

Specifically, we would like to thank our gracious hosts at IMET. They provided us an excellent opportunity to learn about aquaculture, the fishing industry, and effects of farming. Additionally, they shared with us insights about research opportunities and the varied career paths to graduate school, faculty positions, and business. We look forward to visiting their beautiful buildings in the future, and dining with some of their aquatic friends at our favorite local establishments!

WIB-Capital Region: YWIB Attends ATLAS Event, May 9, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Saturday, June 22, 2019

On May 9, 2015, members of the WIB-Capital Region Young Women In Bio committee attended the ATLAS (Advancing Tomorrow’s Leaders + STEM) event, hosted by the MdBio Foundation at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland. The event was designed to encourage high school juniors, seniors, and college undergraduates to learn more about careers in science, technology, and engineering. We had a well-positioned table, and many students stopped by to learn more about YWIB and WIB.

We all had a great time meeting the students, talking with them about the variety of careers available with a STEM degree, and YWIB and WIB activities that may be of interest to them. This event was a huge success, and our participation in such event was a great way to spread the word about YWIB and WIB to students and their parents!

WIB-Capital Region: YWIB Attends Naval STEM Exposition, April 12, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Saturday, June 22, 2019

On April 12, 2015, the WIB-Capital Region Chapter Young Women In Bio attended the “Naval Stem Exposition” as a way to get the word out about our program. In the process of setting up a booth, we also taught children about DNA by having them make stands of DNA by using gummies candies and licorice. According to the exposition organizers, more than 1000 attendees were expected.

Our table generated a large crowd alongside other exposition vendors such as “Science Brothers,” “Virtual Flight Academy,” and numerous Robotic Vendors. The event ended with a talk given by former Astronaut Frank Culbertson, and we generated numerous leads for future YWIB members. Overall the event was fun and educational, and thanks to Northrop Grumman and the Navel League who were the major sponsors of the event.

The two hour tour consisted of a visit to the calf barn where the students were able to pet and visit with the calves, meet the famous Animal Planet chicks, see the cow maternity ward, tour and learn about the milk production process, and finished up the tour with a scoop of homemade ice cream!

This was DC/Baltimore’s first Food Science focused YWIB event and was a great success! Special thanks to our YWIB hosts - Dr. Stacie Bell and Susan Griffen.
