WIB-Capital Region: YWIB Attends ATLAS Event, May 9, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Saturday, June 22, 2019

On May 9, 2015, members of the WIB-Capital Region Young Women In Bio committee attended the ATLAS (Advancing Tomorrow’s Leaders + STEM) event, hosted by the MdBio Foundation at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland. The event was designed to encourage high school juniors, seniors, and college undergraduates to learn more about careers in science, technology, and engineering. We had a well-positioned table, and many students stopped by to learn more about YWIB and WIB.

We all had a great time meeting the students, talking with them about the variety of careers available with a STEM degree, and YWIB and WIB activities that may be of interest to them. This event was a huge success, and our participation in such event was a great way to spread the word about YWIB and WIB to students and their parents!

WIB-Capital Region: "From the Labels to the Lips: The Science Behind the Foods We Eat,” May 7, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Saturday, June 22, 2019

On Thursday May 7, 2015, members of the WIB-Capital Region chapter gathered at the Columbia Campus of Loyola University for a panel discussion on the appetizing topic of food science, sponsored by Parker Flavors.

Industry experts Dr. Janet Collins, Senior Vice President of Science & Regulatory Affairs at CropLife America, and Teri Curran Mascuch, VP of Technical Innovation and Health & Wellness, McCormick & Company, Inc., offered unique insights in the evolving interplay between food technology advances and consumer-driven trends in the food industry.

Dr. Lynn Johnson Langer, Director of Regulatory Science and Enterprise Programs at Johns Hopkins University, moderated a stimulating and interactive dialogue between panelists and guests with topics including:

- Scientific advocacy and communication towards protecting and informing consumers
- The shift from food safety to values-driven consumer marketing
- The role of science in the GMO debate
- All-natural and clean label food trends
- Regulation in the food industry.

Final thoughts from the panelists highlighted the vast opportunities for food-related careers across the value chain - from product development and manufacturing to agriculture and education.

The program began and ended with networking among event attendees over a healthy spread of food. Special thanks to Dr. Mary Beth Wilson, CEO of Innovesca--and also an engaging volunteer from our chapter program committee--for the diligent summary for this post event report!

WIB-Capital Region: YWIB Attends Naval STEM Exposition, April 12, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Saturday, June 22, 2019

On April 12, 2015, the WIB-Capital Region Chapter Young Women In Bio attended the “Naval Stem Exposition” as a way to get the word out about our program. In the process of setting up a booth, we also taught children about DNA by having them make stands of DNA by using gummies candies and licorice. According to the exposition organizers, more than 1000 attendees were expected.

Our table generated a large crowd alongside other exposition vendors such as “Science Brothers,” “Virtual Flight Academy,” and numerous Robotic Vendors. The event ended with a talk given by former Astronaut Frank Culbertson, and we generated numerous leads for future YWIB members. Overall the event was fun and educational, and thanks to Northrop Grumman and the Navel League who were the major sponsors of the event.

The two hour tour consisted of a visit to the calf barn where the students were able to pet and visit with the calves, meet the famous Animal Planet chicks, see the cow maternity ward, tour and learn about the milk production process, and finished up the tour with a scoop of homemade ice cream!

This was DC/Baltimore’s first Food Science focused YWIB event and was a great success! Special thanks to our YWIB hosts - Dr. Stacie Bell and Susan Griffen.

The WIB-Capital Region Chapter held its 2nd Annual Women’s History Month event on March 24, 2015. This year we hosted a panel discussion entitled “Funding Your Biotech Enterprise” at the University of Maryland BioPark in Baltimore, Maryland.

The event panel consisted of several dynamic entrepreneurs such as Iris Sherman, CEO Kitchology, who served as the moderator for this event, Dr. Audra Stinchcomb, CSO and Founder of F6 Pharma, and Wendy Perrow, CEO at Alba Therapeutics. These amazing women shared their professional and personal experiences in raising funding for their business ventures. They offered great insights into different funding mechanisms, and how to approach and secure various types of investment partnerships. It is clear that these women have a lot of experience, and we appreciate them taking the time to share their experiences with us.

As always, we offer our sincerest gratitude to our event sponsors, the University of Maryland BioPark and TEDCO. The DC/Baltimore Chapter of WIB would like to invite our members and supporters to join us as we provide an amazing and dynamic line up of events for 2015! Stay tuned!
