WIB-Capital Region: Holiday Gala, December 15, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

When we look back at WIB-Capital Region’s 2015, we can point to a series of exciting events organized by our chapter. The year’s grand finale was our major networking event - the Holiday Gala Celebration, held on December 15, 2015, at Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar in Rockville.

Approximately fifty members and their guests attended the event, where they received brief introductions by our chapter's functionaries and had plenty of opportunities for networking as well as fantastic food and wine.

Congratulations to our WIB-DC/Baltimore chapter member, Di Gao, who won a WIB Founders Scholarship this year!

And now - a month into the New Year - we continue to appreciate the hard work and chapter support of our volunteers, members, and guests. Here’s looking forward to our chapter providing even more exciting events for you in 2016!

WIB-Capital Region: YWIB-Capital Region Fall Semester Recap and Looking Ahead

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

With the 2016 year upon us, the YWIB Capital Region chapter wanted to take a moment to reflect on such a successful fall semester. The school year began with a change in chapter leadership, but thanks to our dedicated committee members we didn’t lose any momentum in the transition. This fall we partnered with the University of Maryland and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technologies to host two afternoons of hands-on science, lab tours and STEM career discussions for middle school through college-aged women. Both events received enthusiastic reviews from participants and we hope to collaborate with such great sponsors in the future. In addition, our committee worked to increase YWIB’s reach and reputation within the greater the education community. In November, YWIB volunteers participated in the ATLAS expo for STEM careers and colleges and later, kicked off the new year with a day exhibiting at the Maryland Out of School Time networking conference. We encourage WIB members to check out pictures and more details on these events on our Facebook page and upcoming chapter website. 2016 is already looking fruitful, with new partnerships and activities underway.

Thank you to our wonderful team and to WIB overall for all the support you have provided us this year. Cheers!

WIB-Capital Region: “A Fresh Start Part II: Continuing your Career Development” Event, November 12, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

WIB-Capital Region hosted a career development event on November 12, 2015, at the Montgomery College, Germantown campus. There were approximately 25 attendees representing academia, government, and the private sector.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Margaret Latimer, M.S., Vice President and Provost of Montgomery College Germantown Campus. Our panel consisted of three seasoned HR professionals and recruiters: Rosemary Sisco, Scientific Recruiter at Kelley Government Solutions, Ashley Bowman, Executive Recruiter at Search Solution Group, and Cecilia Matthews, Human Resources Director at MedImmune. Each of these HR professionals participated in a breakout session with a group of attendees, listened to their elevator pitches, and provided individual feedback.

Following the breakout sessions there was a panel discussion where Rosemary, Ashley, and Cecilia explained that the key to a good elevator pitch is that it should be succinct, focused on a target audience, and delivered with passion. Next, there was a Q&A session where the panelists discussed the importance of emotional intelligence, and encouraged everyone to do homework on behavioral interview questions. There was also discussion about gender inequalities during interview and hiring processes – an area where all panelists acknowledged that women applicants fall short when negotiating. The panelists suggested that job seekers should consider the total compensation package rather than just base salary.

The panel also gave advice on writing personalized post-interview emails, rather than just a thank you note, and taking the opportunity to reiterate one’s skills. Dr. Collins Jones, Professor of Biotechnology at Montgomery College, and Mr. Jim Hamer, Project Manager for DP Clinical, made valuable comments on job search and career development.

The evening ended with networking among attendees, followed by Dr. Jones providing a guided tour of the new Bioscience Education Center. Many thanks to DP Clinical, Inc., a contract research organization that serves pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients, for providing the evening’s food and beverages!

Specifically, we would like to thank our gracious hosts at IMET. They provided us an excellent opportunity to learn about aquaculture, the fishing industry, and effects of farming. Additionally, they shared with us insights about research opportunities and the varied career paths to graduate school, faculty positions, and business. We look forward to visiting their beautiful buildings in the future, and dining with some of their aquatic friends at our favorite local establishments!

WIB-Capital Region: BioBowl 2015! October 31, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Sunday, June 23, 2019

This October 31, 2015, event, hosted by Medimmune and BioHealth Innovation at the “Bowlmor” in Gaithsburg, Maryland, featured an informal afternoon of networking, fun, and good food. Biopharmaceutical professionals from twenty-eight biotech companies competed against each other to win the coveted “BioBowl Trophy”.

Our WIB-Team of 8 scored well above the average numbers. Eka Chighladze, Young Women In Bio Co-Chair, excelled with the highest score for the night. To facilitate networking for biopharmaceutical professionals, after the first round of team-based bowling, everyone was shuffled to randomly form a new “networking team”: Each bowler had the opportunity to play with members of other teams while establishing new important connections - all with good laughs and while enjoying delicious food.

Thank you all to our experienced-bowlers! WIB is already looking forward to next year’s BioBowl…let’s start practicing!!

WIB-Capital Region: End of Summer Potluck and Networking Event, August 26, 2015

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Saturday, June 22, 2019

The WIB-Capital Region chapter hosted its End of Summer Potluck and Networking event on August 26, 2015, at the Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein, and Fox law firm in Washington, DC.

The evening began with heavy networking among our members and supporters who had the opportunity to meet and connect with women in the biotech industry--professionals, attorneys, entrepreneurs, and researchers--while enjoying drinks and various foods. We then did introductions so that all attendees could get familiar with our organization. In addition, the ladies were eager to learn more about the law firm so Ms. Judith Kim, Director of the Biotechnology Group, gave them a warm welcome and an overview of the firm and its business interests.

It was an extremely successful event with attendees from as far away as Richmond, Virginia and Queens, New York. We would like to thank our event sponsor for their steadfast support of WIB, and we also want to thank our members, supporters, and sponsors for their continued support.
