Women In Bio–Capital Region’s September 17, 2015, “Business of Biotech- It Takes a Village” event was attended by over 50 attendees from various areas of life sciences industry wanting to learn about the resources available to them locally and how to reap their benefits.

The evening started with the panelists being introduced by Dr. Yolanda Hawkins, the moderator for the evening. Ms. Jennifer Hammaker, Director, Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), TEDCO, shared with us what MII and TEDCO were about with various funding and mentoring programs available to budding entrepreneurs. Then Dr. Valerie Fremont, Director, Life Sciences and Health IT, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development, talked about Montgomery County becoming the hub of biotech companies in Maryland, and the incentives that they were provided to startups. Next, Dr. Ethel Rubin, Entrepreneur-In-Residence, BioHealth Innovation (BHI), gave an introduction to the BHI organization and its various events that rising entrepreneurs could attend. Finally, Ms. Judy Costello, the Acting Executive Director of BioMaryland Center, gave us an insight on the present and upcoming incubators available in Maryland.

The event was followed by rounds of Q&A with the panelists and a networking hour over drinks and food. Huge thanks to our sponsors BHI and JHU Carey Business School for this event, and special thanks to Kritika Khurana for volunteering to give us a report of this event!
