WIB-RTP Celebrates the Season with Our Annual Holiday Party!
Women In Bio-RTP celebrated a successful 2016 on December 15, 2016, during its Annual Holiday Party at RTP Headquarters. It was a fun evening of socializing, networking, and entertaining for all those who attended. Aga Truax, WIB-RTP Chapter Chair, kicked off the evening’s events with a summary of our chapter’s great accomplishments over the past year, including hosting 12 events and Young Women In Bio offering 10 free events to girls of various ages of our community.
Aga also highlighted two new and very successful chapter events - our Lunch Time Workshop, “Find your Financial Fortitude,” and a MAPs social event with painting activity. In addition, she reminded everyone about our very successful YWIB event, “Spring into STEM,” where the idea of innovation and entrepreneurship was presented to over 150 girls. This event was the largest Young Women In Bio event held by any WIB chapter in 2016, and a great success. Due to the overwhelming positive feedback our chapter received on these new events, we plan to make them our annual tradition. In addition, Aga reminded us that our chapter’s Young Women In Bio group was a US2020 2016 STEMmy Award Finalist for Youth Serving Organization of the Year.
Aga also recognized and thanked all the committee members from WIB-RTP for their hard work. In particular, she focused on three very special Board members who have been actively involved with our chapter for years, and have made an incredible impact on the success of our Chapter: Sathya Ganesan, Stephanie Byrd, and Meredith Earl. All three of them have always gone above and beyond to make things happen. They have built a strong, large team of volunteers, and have led them to plan and execute events that ultimately made an impact on our RTP community. All three of them clearly have a passion for giving back to others and are phenomenal mentors to so many others.
As an extra bonus, Christine Warrington, the Founding Chair for WIB-RTP and a Global Chair of Women In Bio, gave inspirational words of advice and encouragement to all members in attendance. She spoke at length about the benefits and importance of the WIB-RTP chapter - not just to its members but to the greater RTP community as a whole. Christine has always been known as a mentor to many in WIB-RTP, but she is also an inspiration; so it’s always an honor to hear her speak.
At the conclusion of the presentation, Aga and Cerdi Beltre, our Sponsorship Chair, announced that Bayer has donated a significant amount of money to our chapter, and has become a Major WIB-RTP Sponsor for 2017. That donation and great group of volunteers will allow us to have even more successful year in 2017.
