WIB Capital Region Wraps Up a Great Year at Annual Holiday Gala

On December 7, 2016, WIB Capital Region capped off a fantastic year with lots of familiar faces in addition to new members at the annual Holiday Gala.

We thanked sponsors Social & Scientific Systems, Inc., Paragon Bioservices, and TEDCO, and had some words of encouragement from Judy Costello of Maryland's Department of Commerce and TEDCO's Arti Santhanam. We also heard some words from our WIB Scholarship award winner, Chelsea Zhou.

Past chapter Presidents Debra Bowes and Lynn Langer reminded us of WIB's origins and history: Started as an organization to connect women entrepreneurs in biology, Women In Bio has grown to much more. Debra and Lynn imparted some wisdom in their prepared words, but we also had fantastic discussion.

Some of Debra and Lynn’s key pieces of advice are highlighted below:

- Get involved. Squeeze everything that you want to out of being a WIB member. One of the best ways to do this is get involved in one of the committees. If possible, join one that gets you out of your comfort zone!
- Don't forget to network with men. Women need to support each other and network, and WIB is an important organization for doing that. However, some opportunities are made available only through networks. A concrete example is the placement of women on boards. As more women take leadership roles, this dynamic will change; but for now, don't exclude yourself from the networks of the people who are making those decisions.
- One of the best things about our membership is also a challenge - our diverse membership requires different needs. Don't be afraid to tap "wiser members." Whether you do so to seek one-on-one mentoring, or to remind them about an upcoming event, don't be afraid to reach out to more senior WIB members and keep them in the fold. However, with that goal in mind, strive to engage both junior and senior members.

We also discussed the past and future role of WIB in policy in addition to our honored guests' hopes and dreams for the Capital Region Chapter and National WIB. It was a night to reflect on where we've been and where we're going. It was a great way to close out the year and get energized for 2017.
