WIB-Philadelphia: Negotiating Skills: The good, the bad, and the downright hard!

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Wednesday, June 5, 2019

November 29, 2017, WIB Philadelphia was thrilled to organize their first breakfast meeting focusing on Negotiating Skills. Speakers Ellen Kittredge Scott and Sherri Bassner provided excellent insight on how to ensure you are effective in your negotiations. A key piece of advice they shared was to Prepare, Prepare, Prepare - gather facts, understand your goals and tradeoffs. It was a very engaging discussion with many in the audience sharing their own challenges and questions. A focus on how to negotiate salary and promotions was especially insightful for many attendees. Thanks to Life Sciences PA for hosting and sponsoring this wonderful event!

WIB-Philadelphia: “What can a Woman do with a Biology Degree?” YWIB Event, May 9, 2017

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Wednesday, June 5, 2019

15 high school students from Downingtown Stem Academy attended a career panel and interactive session on May 9, 2017. As the first event provided by WIB-Philadelphia Metro’s Young Women In Bio (YWIB) committee, the event was special and showcased YWIB’s interest in expanding STEM career exposure to middle and high school students.

The program began with three panelists talking about their career choices, educational experience, and their paths to where they are today. The attending students were then divided into groups which rotated through three sessions guided by panelists.

Dr. Kamala Maddali, Vice President, Biopharma Collaborations and Companion Diagnostics at Cancer Genetics Inc., spoke about her career in cancer genetics and asked the girls compelling questions to engage and educate them on different opportunities and areas of unmet need in cancer research.

A second segment led by Melissa Dowd, an Account Manager with Aerotek Scientific, reviewed career choices in STEM fields. The students then played a matching game to test their knowledge of different career paths and discussed the roles.

In a third exercise, Priya Narahari, Associate at the law firm of DLA Piper LLP (US), facilitated a thought experiment on antibiotics to simulate working in a lab. Priya also educated the students on patent law in life sciences.

WIB-Philadelphia: WIB-Philadelphia Exhibits at Life Sciences Pennsylvania

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Wednesday, June 5, 2019

On May 4th, WIB-Philadelphia exhibited at the Life Science Pennsylvania’s Annual Spring Social. The leadership had so much fun wearing their derby hats and enjoying the festivities. Our chapter received a ton of interest (and not just because we were well situated between the bar & food)! Both men and women, were excited to learn more about us and expressed interest in financially supporting our chapter and getting more involved. We are thankful to Karen Delone, our Membership Vice Chair and LSPA for allowing us this opportunity to showcase WIB at this fantastic event!

WIB-Philadelphia: Women’s History Month Panel Discussion with Industry Leaders, March 29, 2017

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Wednesday, June 5, 2019

On March 29, 2017, the WIB-Philadelphia Metro chapter celebrated Women’s History Month with a jam-packed event focused on obstacles women face in their daily lives.

Attendees enjoyed food and cocktails from the Bonefish Grill and had a chance to network and mingle with each other. We had several guests and brand new members join us in this nearly sold out event!

Chapter President Dunni Odumosu welcomed all of us to get our event started! Once Melissa Dowd, of the chapter Programming Committee, introduced our Moderator and panelists, the rest of the session flew by with laughter, emotions, and great advice.

The panel session was moderated by Michelle Grant (DeNigris), Senior Manager at Navigate Corporation. Megan Weisheipl began the evening by wowing the audience with her knowledge of Women’s History, and shared with us her career ups and downs. Next, Pamela Nichols advised the audience to “Think about what we would do in the absence of fear, and it's all about training your thoughts. The world is your oyster!” The audience was then wowed by the firsts and challenges of Laura Conour, and reminded by Denise D'Andrea to “Raise your hand and don't be afraid to ask for new responsibilities.” Dr. Ruth Ann Subach then reminded us that "There's a difference between work-life balance and work-life boundaries," and don’t feel that you have to get it all in: “There are 3 out of 5 things most people choose from: work, fitness, family, sleep, and friends."

Every attendee took something away from this panel session – whether the takeaway was in regards to how one overcomes a personal situation, or concerning how to work towards getting that next promotion. The panel discussion was fantastic, and we could have continued the conversation for hours!

One of the evening’s overriding messages concerned “finding your tribe”… being with likeminded women, and supporting each other, rang through the room this evening, and we look forward to our next event!

WIB-Philadelphia Metro: Discussing the Book "Grit" with Author Angela Duckworth, February 16, 2017

Posted By Breezy Lachance, Tuesday, June 4, 2019

On February 16, 2017, WIB-Philadelphia-Metro was honored to discuss the book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance with the book’s author, Angela Duckworth, Ph.D.

During the event, Dr. Duckworth, a Psychology professor and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, discussed highlights of her book with a packed house at the law offices of event sponsor DLA Piper LLP.

One topic discussed was the fact that grit, a common characteristic of high achievers, is something that can be learned and increased throughout life by the act of deliberate practice.

After a short presentation, Dr. Duckworth opened the floor for an engaging Q&A session. Some of the questions revolved around risk taking and competitive nature, and how they correlated (if at all) with grit.

Following the presentation and Q&A, attendees enjoyed networking, food, and drinks. Thanks to DLA Piper for hosting and sponsoring and all of the attendees who read the book, watched Dr. Duckworth’s TED Talk, and participated in a lively conversation.
