WIB-National: BIO Convention BPI Panel Discussion 2019

Posted By Lisa Iadicicco, Wednesday, June 19, 2019
Women In Bio (WIB) presented a panel of Boardroom Ready program graduates discussing career paths, ambitions and how to manage career curveballs at the BioProcess International Theater on Thursday, June 6th.  The lively panel featured Ethel Rubin, Entrepreneur In Residence for Bio Health Innovations, Lori Lyons-Williams, Chief Commercial Officer, Dermira and Sofija Jovic founder and former CEO of Prophase and was moderated by WIB’s President Emeritus, Cassidy Cantin.  The panel discussed managing your career juxtaposed to life’s challenges and how to thrive despite those challenges. The panelist stressed the power of one’s network and the ability to pivot one’s experiences to be more applicable for new opportunities.  One does not know where the next opportunity will come from, but too often we limit ourselves by saying we “can’t” – women are often their worst critic and we can accomplish so much more if we just take a chance and try.

WIB-National: BIO Convention Roundup 2019

Posted By Lisa Iadicicco, Wednesday, June 19, 2019

It was fabulous to see so many of you at the BIO2019 International Conference!! The WIB presence was definitely felt -- and heard (at least, that’s what BIO attendees said when walking across the Exhibit Floor during the WIB Speed Networking session Tuesday). We hosted well-attended events Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Basically, it was a week of WIB!

Over 60 executives gathered for breakfast and to hear Terri Matkovits’ amazing career story. Her frank and pointed advice was clear:  be open to new experiences but be thoughtful in your choices.  Thank you to the EWIB team for organizing another fantastic kick-off for BIO Conference!

The Monday evening plenary wowed over 250 attendees with three amazing panelists. Simone Fishburn led a lively discussion with panelists and smoothly incorporated audience participation.  Courage to build, lead, and inspire was a key theme throughout the evening’s conversation. Aoife Brennan, Sheila Gujrathi, and Bethany Edwards forged unique paths yet each CEO engaged their network to advance both their career and their innovations. These remarkable women shared perspectives on what success means and the many ways it can take shape.  We are so appreciative of their candor, humor, and positive encouragement.

Following introductions, Teresa Matkovits, Chief Development Officer at Matinas BioPharma, discussed juggling rolls in the C-Suite and on multiple corporate boards, driving a lively conversation about leadership in life sciences and beyond. Join us next year for this vibrant, invite-only event!

WIB-Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh Life Sciences Week - 2019 Keynote Dr Frances Arnold, May 13, 2019

Posted By Ceren Tuzmen , Friday, May 17, 2019

WIB-Pittsburgh members, leaders, the WIB National President, and WIB's Executive Director welcomed Nobel Laureate, Dr. Frances Arnold to her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, May 13.  The city was honored to host Dr. Arnold as the keynote speaker for the kick-off of Life Sciences Week, an extravaganza showcasing the region's inspiring research and work. The week is co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Innovation District and Women In Green.

Dr. Arnold’s talk was sincere and funny, engaging the audience with stories from her childhood, such as her memory of being suspended from school for cutting classes while she was a student at Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh. Dr. Arnold pioneered “directed protein evolution” and has used it first for altering enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions. She later applied her methods in alternative energy and medicine, and she is the co-founder of companies, including Gevo Inc. and Provivi Inc., which focuses on more sustainable fuel sources and using pheromones for pest control. According to Arnold: “The biological world is the best engineer, best chemist, and best biologist, and there is nothing more innovative than the biological world. We have a lot to learn about how nature innovates!”
