WIB-Pittsburgh: Two scientists walk into a bar...March 8, 2019

Posted By Stephanie Puig, Tuesday, April 9, 2019

On International Women's Day - Friday, March 8, 2019, WIB members participated in the program “Two Scientists Walk Into A Bar” from the Carnegie Science Center of Pittsburgh.  This program is hosted in bars across the city every few months, where scientists go to a bar to have a casual conversation with people who may wonder what the life of a “real scientist” is like or just want to have a chat with scientists and “shoot the breeze over a couple of drinks”!

From left to right: Russell Parkinson, Karen Carney, Kristi Allen, Blaise Brown, Caley Yakemowicz

In March, every scientist was a woman to honor International Women's Day. Karen Carney (Clinical Content Analyst - Via Oncology), our WIB-Pgh programming chair participated and was stationed at Federal Galley posting signs that read: “We are scientists. Ask us anything!” With her partner (Kristi Allen, a chemist), they talked to bar patrons about a variety of topics such as:  What do clouds feel like? How can we make cars lighter and more fuel efficient? Are there endocrine disruptors in our water supply and how do they impact our bodies? Can humans smell pheromones? What a fun way to spend the evening and spread the greatness of science!

Though each woman’s career journey was unique, common qualities and advice that got them to where they are: find a mentor in the field you are interested in, adopt a growth/grit mindset, be adaptable and open to learning new things, cultivate your soft skills, and always be true to who you are. The event offered ample opportunity for attendees to network and commune with like-minded, career focused professions in the life sciences. Overall, a highly productive and motivating evening!

Posted By Stacie Oliver , Sunday, February 24, 2019

On February 20th, 2019, WIB-Pittsburgh members gathered at Painting with a Twist to socialize and explore their artistic talents in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. After enjoying some light appetizers and drinks attendees enjoyed a special painting session with guidance provided by local artists. Everyone went home with their own interpretation of the painting, “Winterberries and Copper”. The winter weather in Pittsburgh may be grey, but we all enjoyed a colorful event!
