Programs
The Women in Bio is dedicated to planning and presenting unique and valuable educational
programs that foster professional and personal growth for women active in the life
sciences. Programs also provide important networking opportunities for members
to build successful companies and excel in their careers. WIB offers several types
of programs to provide optimal benefit to its members.
1. The Entrepreneur and Executive Programs
The Entrepreneur and Executive Programs (EEP) provide informal, intimate
forums to focus on a specific business or regulatory theme, led by an expert panel. These
programs are open only to entrepreneurs, executives and those considering starting
their own companies, and allows these individuals to have frank, open discussions
with area experts. Topics are based upon their relevance in building skills,
knowledge, and resources for biotechnology and life sciences executives. Prior
EEP themes have included FDAs Role in the New Drug Development Process; Potential
Liability for the Life Science Entrepreneur; and In-Licensing: Developing a Strategy
and Negotiating the Terms.
2. Professional Development
The Professional Development programs are aimed at building personal skills
and competencies that may have an important impact on professional development and
career satisfaction. Current programs are centered on communication skills to
equip women to feel more confident expressing themselves in their professions and
in their personal lives. Examples of programs include a seminar by international
author Dr. Deborah Tannen entitled She Said, He Said: Women and Men at Work,
and an interactive workshop on Negotiation Skills for Women, conducted by Ellen Zavian,
a pioneer in professional sports negotiations and Penny Daniels a communications expert.
3. Young Women in Bio (YWIB)
YWIB are educational programs for middle- and high-school aged girls in order
to expose them to the world of bioscience, and the breadth of career opportunities
that may be pursued. YWIB has co-sponsored programs with biotechnology companies,
such as Celera Genomics and MedImmune, and has participated in summer science camp
programming at Montgomery Community College.
4. Member Networking
The Member Networking events enable current members to meet and form supportive
networks. Events include an annual reception at the U.S. Botanical Gardens;
a holiday party and informal events, such as participating as a group in relevant
5K runs, barbecues and musical events.
5. Annual Dinner
Women in Bio hosts an Annual Dinner every year which celebrates the accomplishments
of women entrepreneurs. All women who have founded or co-founded a life science
company that is currently operational are honored. Past entrepreneurial Keynote
speakers are Dr. Sharon Mates of Functional Genetics, Dr. Nancy Chang of Tanox, Dr.
Carol Nacy of Sequella, Dr. Norka Ruiz Bravo of NIH and Dr. Martine Rothblatt of United
Therapeutics. The event is always sold out, and is evidence of the tremendous
talent and energy possessed by the women in our scientific community.
