YWIB is a special initiative of Women In Bio, designed to introduce young women in middle and high school to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
YWIB Pittsburgh holds events for young women that introduce them to a range of STEM careers in the biosciences. Many of these events allow them meet with women in bioscience fields to discuss career trajectories, opportunities, and strategies for success. YWIB Pittsburgh has capitalized on the many academic institutions and local biosciences companies in the greater Pittsburgh area to share and discuss a wide array of careers with our student attendees.
Carnegie Science Center: YWIB Pittsburgh has partnered with the Carnegie Science Center for multiple events over the last several years. For example, we have demonstrated biology and chemistry experiments at their Girls Rock Science Weekend events. Additionally, they have been generous enough to share their classroom facilities with YWIB Pittsburgh to hold events such as our “Women who made history in science” event, where we introduced Girl Scouts in grades 4-7 to historical women who were influential in the biological sciences. We will soon be hosting an event as a part of the Carnegie Science Center Tour Your Future program (see below), which is designed to introduce young women in middle- and high-school to STEM careers.
Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair: For the last three years, YWIB Pittsburgh members have been involved in the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF) as Sponsoring Judges. Members judged projects in the Biology category, at the 7th and 8th grade levels. In addition to the judging they did as part of the PRSEF competition itself, YWIB members also awarded two $50 Sponsor Awards each year to young women whose projects our members felt really stood out from the crowd.

University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute and Swanson School of Engineering: YWIB Pittsburgh is collaborating with these two entities at the University of Pittsburgh to develop an event that will be part of the Tour Your Future program at the Carnegie Science Center. This program is designed to introduce young women in middle- and high-school to STEM careers. The event will take place in the University of Pittsburgh Makerspace, in the Swanson School of Engineering, and the girls in the program will participate in a hands-on ‘pretotyping’ activity to introduce them to what it means to be an entrepreneur and innovator in science and technology and how a new idea is cultivated.
