Women In Bio concluded its winter webinar two-part series on business development. The first session focused on Licensing 101 and the second session focused on Negotiations 101. Highlights of both webinars are below.
Business Development Webinar Series: Part I Summary
Cat Oyler, Senior Director Emerging Technologies, Johnson & Johnson, and Eva Jack, Chief Business Officer, Pulmatrix, Inc., served as expert panelists January 20, 2011, covering essential skills and their experiences in licensing at both a small biotech company, such as Pulmatrix, as well as a large pharma, like J&J. The speakers emphasized critical elements necessary in the licensing process – from understanding the assets involved to being aware of the reimbursement and regulatory environment. Before participating in the licensing process, they explained, you also need to:
know what you want out of the deal,
use publicly available resources for research purposes,
understand how your asset fits into your potential partner's pipeline, and
recognize the importance of due diligence on your potential partner's capabilities.
Cat Oyler and Eva Jack wrapped up the formal presentation with a "to do" check list summarizing the out-licensing process, and then WIB president, Debra Bowes led an interactive discussion.

“Negotiations 101” Session Wraps Up WIB Winter Webinar Series
WIB hosted the second session in the two-part business development winter webinar series, "Product Out-Licensing Process and Negotiation" on Thursday, February 17, 2011. Attendees joined expert speakers Cat Oyler, Senior Director Emerging Technologies, Johnson & Johnson, and Eva Jack, Chief Business Officer, Pulmatrix, Inc., for “Negotiations 101.” During this informative presentation, the speakers shared their professional experiences and provided tips to use when negotiating business deals. Creating a term sheet, which serves as the starting point of the negotiation, was the focus of the session. Common term sheet features including geographic territory, field of use (e.g., indication), intellectual property (e.g., patents), and of course, financials were also highlighted. Emphasis was directed toward the importance of focusing on your highest priorities and the need to be prepared to compromise on the lower priorities. The session concluded with a reminder that your objective is not to "win," but to create the foundation for a long-term working relationship.
