Reflecting on a Remarkable 2010
President Emeritus Lynn Johnson Langer recently passed the presidential baton and reflected on an incredible year of growth and numerous achievements for WIB. In Lynn's letter, she acknowledged WIB members, committee chairs, and the countless volunteers who contributed to the phenomenal success of WIB in 2010. Lynn shared highlights of the year and recapped several milestones that were met including increased membership, the launch of two new WIB chapters, and the award of our first grant to name just a few! WIB and BIO Co-Sponsor the Women Leading the Way Podcast Series.
Together with BIO, WIB has launched a podcast series to capture the perspective on biotech of female entrepreneurs and industry leaders. The third podcast in the series features Dr. Lynn Johnson Langer, the current President of Women in Bio, and Debra Bowes, President-Elect of Women in Bio, share their thoughts on the organization’s greatest contributions to the industry, goals for the next 3-5 years, and inspiring women to succeed in the life sciences. WIB National Holiday Party

Winter WIB-RTP Chapter Hosts First Holiday Party
RTP celebrated the season on December 7th at the beautiful Chatham Hill Winery where guests sampled local wines and ate delicious food in the candlelit tasting room and art gallery. For a full summary of the event, click here.
Biogen Hosts Successful RTP-YWIB Event
On December 2, 2010, Biogen Idec and Young Women In Bio (YWIB) hosted the first Research Triangle Park (RTP)-YWIB event at Biogen Idec’s headquarters in Durham, North Carolina. During this activity-packed evening, a group of 30 curious middle school girls toured the Biogen Idec facility, participated in hands-on experiments, and had their questions answered by female scientists. Winter Weather No Match for WIB-Chicago Chapter Kick-Off Event
WIB-Chicago members and friends gathered to celebrate the launch of Chicago's chapter in a warm and welcoming atmosphere at Ghostbar on November 4th. More than 60 attendees joined in the festivities to network and listen to guest speaker, Dr. Neena Schwartz, Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University and author of "A Lab Of My Own." WIB Meetings Go Virtual
WIB kicked off its educational "Meet the Expert" series on November 3 featuring Dr. Janet Woodcock, Director of The Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the U.S. FDA. The discussion was hosted in downtown Washington, DC and streamed live to North Carolina to the WIB-RTP Chapter. More info.
WIB's Leadership Shines at Mid-Atlantic Bio Conference.
With Women In Bio as a sponsor of the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Bio Conference, WIB members participated in many ways and helped the program shine. On behalf of WIB, President Dr. Lynn Johnson Langer hosted the session, “Building a Culture of Innovation and Commercialization,” on Thursday, October 28, at the Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center, and also served among the prestigious panelists for this information-packed discussion. Throughout the 3-day conference, WIB members were seen networking, volunteering, making great contacts, and sharing the benefits of WIB with prospective members.

YWIB at Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day
Young Women In Bio exhibited at the second Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day, on October 8, 2010, at Johns Hopkins University, in the Shady Grove Life Science Center.  WIB volunteers conducted hands-on science experiments with 600 seventh grade students from the Julius West and Montgomery Village Middle Schools. The students made “worms” and did bean-counting to understand the cost and time involved in developing a biopharmaceutical drug. They learned about exciting career opportunities in science, medicine, and research.  
 
WIB All Committees and Board Retreat Urges Thinking Nationally
The September 19, 2010, WIB All Committees and Board Retreat, at the Belmont Conference Center near BWI Airport provided an opportunity for committee chairs, vice chairs, and board members to refine the goals, strategy, program, and direction for WIB programs for 2011. Read more »

Meet CoverGirl's Youngest Chemist - YWIB Participant Shira Rubin!
Shira Rubin, a participant in the Young Women In Bio (YWIB) program at Procter & Gamble this Spring, received a complimentary CoverGirl(R) makeover and was featured by TeenVogue Beauty Blogger Eva Chen in a recent interview. The visit to P&G inspired Shira to pursue a career in chemistry. Read more about her story and how this WIB program offers views into scientific careers to middle school girls.
Robbie Melton Scholarship Fund
Women in Bio has launched a scholarship fund to support the educational development of women working and pursuing careers in the life sciences industry. Known as the Robbie Melton Scholarship Fund, in honor of WIB's co-founder, two $1,000 scholarships will be offered this year: one for a woman already in the industry and one for a student in a life science field. Women In Bio 2009 Holiday Reception
On December 8, Women in Bio members and friends gathered to celebrate the warmth and spirit of the season at our annual Holiday Reception. This year's sold out event, held at the Grapeseed Bistro, featured good food, libation, and merriment. This was a tremendously successful event for our organization and a wonderful way to end the past year.

*FULL*  WIB-Washington DC/Baltimore:  Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) Hosts Young Women In Bio: Exploring Bioscience and Careers
The Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine invites Baltimore area middle school girls for an afternoon discovering the fun and challenge of science and medical careers. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 4:00 p.m.to 6:45 p.m. EDT in downtown Baltimore.  It includes a hands-on lab exercise and an informal discussion with women working in science and medicine. A separate simultaneous event about nurturing interests in science will be held for parents. WIB-San Francisco Bay Area:  Join Us for an Evening of Speed Networking
An exciting environment for women in the biotech industry to meet as many people as possible in a two-hour time period.  This is a great way to mingle, learn fast facts and make connections with new peers in the region. WIB-San Francisco Bay Area will be hosting speed networking events periodically with this first event in San Francisco on May 21, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. pst to 8:30 p.m. pst  at K&L Gates.
