2011 WIB Annual Dinner Celebrates Women  in the Life Sciences

Nearly 300 members, honored guests, and industry peers gathered at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, March 29 to join Women In Bio for its Annual Dinner to recognize and honor "Advancing Women in the Life Sciences."

The Annual Dinner is WIB's premier networking event drawing life sciences professionals from the mid-Atlantic area, as well as from new WIB chapters in Chicago and North Carolina. According to WIB President-Elect and Board member, Phyllis Dillinger, "This is the advancement of a powerful group of women in the life sciences that is changing the outcomes for new leaders and women-owned companies."

President Debra Bowes welcomed members and thanked the sponsors and volunteers for making this event happen. Ms. Bowes gave an overview of WIB's achievements and programs. President Emeritus, Lynn Johnson Langer, spoke about the Robbie Melton Scholarship Fund and announced Ms. Kim Abramson and Ms. Nan Li as the 2011 award winners. Christine Warrington, WIB-RTP Chapter Chair, summarized the activities and successful accomplishments of the new WIB chapters in Research Triangle Park and Chicago for 2010.

The highlight of the evening was an inspiring presentation from keynote speaker, Dr. Maxine Gowen, founding President and CEO of Trevena, Inc. Dr. Gowen grew up in the United Kingdom and was able to cultivate both a scientific and business background – obtaining a Ph.D. in cell biology, as well as an M.B.A. from Wharton. Dr. Gowen talked about her journey through post doctoral studies to management roles at GlaxoSmithKline. She has balanced her family and work roles and has mentored many women in her career. Dr. Gowen encouraged the audience to "Do what you feel is right," adding, "Nothing is ever wasted." Her remarks emphasized that each step in our career path ends up adding to our growth.
